  1. Ancient Nikopolis is located 10 km north of the cirty of Preveza on the national road Preveza Ioannina. A few kilometers outside of Preveza, the largest ancient city in Greece Nikopolis, was the pride of the Roman emperor Octavian, the city he built in remembrance of his victory over the invading fleet of Antonios & Cleopatra, in the battle of Aktion in 31 BC. The city stretches for acres, so many that you will have to drive from the Conservatory to the Theater and the Byzantine Walls, that continue for miles. The archaeological site includes, in addition to the Conservatory and the Theater, two early basilicas with impressive mosaics, the August monument and the stadium. The city developed and flourished both in roman times, where it numbered about 300.000 and later during the early Christian period. The visitor of Ancient Nikopolis will be impressed by the large area of the archeological site, that extends from the Ionian to the Amvrakikos gulf, and the number of surviving monuments that are scattered in an area of about 1500 acres.
  2. Archeological Museum. It is located at the northern entrance of the city of Preveza, 2 km from the city of Nikopolis. The museum exhibits connect the museum with the monuments of the archeological site and show the evolution of the city over time. It narrates the history of the city brilliantly, startingfrom its foundation immediately after the naval battle of Aktion and reaching as far as the archeological excavations of the beginning of the 20th century. City life is one of the museum’s largest and most interesting sections, and a copy of a roman map depicting the then-famous world is one of the most interesting axhibits. The exhibition is held in two rooms: the first presents the birth and evolution of the majestic roman and early Christian Nikopolis, while the second is dedicated to the private life of these two periods.
  3. Necromancer (Gates of Hades) The ancient necromancer of Acheron is located in the village of Mesopotamos, Prefecture of Preveza, at a distance of 40 km from Preveza, direction towards Igoumenitsa at the place where, according to Homer, Acheron river meets Kykotos & Pyriflegedon, on the northern shores of Lake Acherousia, which was the entrance to the world of souls. The Necromancer is built at the top of a hill, where the visitors went to communicate with the souls of their loved ones. Homer, describes in the Odyssey in detail the area during the descent of Odysseus to Hades. After the drying up of the Lake Acherousia in the 50’s, the whole geography of the area was changed and all that remains is the calm contribution of Acheron and Vovos rivers in the plain, a few meters near the hill of the Necromancer. The first operation and construction of the Necromances dates back to the Mycenean times (120 BC) but many of today s ruins appear to be from the Hellenistic period (323 BC onwards).
  4. Monument of Zalongo. The monument of Zalongo is a well known historical site on the mountain of the same name, which became a symbol of love and freedom. Here a unique event in world history took place. In 1803 when Souli, after many years of struggle, succumbed to Ali Pasha, 63 women with their children in their arms, fell from the rock, singing and dancing, preferring to die free than surrender to the Turkish conqueror. Symbol and memory of the sacrifice of the Souliot women, is the monument built here in 1961, with a panhellenic fundraiser (sculptor G.Zongolopoulos, architect P.Karantinos) to which, in order to reach it, you have to climb 410 steps starting from the monastery of Aghios Demetrios. Festive events are organized every year on the second Sunday of August (Zalongia).
  5. The Metropolitan Church of Aghios Charalambos. In the center of the historic city and next to the Venetian Clock Tower, in the place of an older church, is a 18th century building. One can admire the excellent icons on the main temple (1793, 1804) and other paintings by Venetian painters as well as the wood carved temple. (1828).
